Hippacus: teaching math through online gaming

Posted on March 26, 2007 by

math based MMORPG
Clickable Culture sent along the link to a new MMORPG called "Hippasus" where you apparently have to fight green-armed guys using only an abacus and a TI-36X scientific calculator.  That’s right, your worst nightmare: an online game where you have to use your math skills to pwn your opponents.

Seriously, this has the potential of being a pretty cool game.  In the limited amount of building and scripting I have done in SL, I have found my pathetic math abilities to be a serious hindrance.  If leveling up in Hippasus meant learning a new set of math principles, then maybe this might help a certain kind of player get some knowledge.

My math teacher girlfriend talks about how kids today are so bad at science and math because they think that every problem can be solved by Googling it. However science and math are learned by slow accretion over time of principles from adjacent fields — knowledge of trigonometry is predicated on knowledge of geometry; knowledge of biology requires a basic knowledge of chemistry.   I.e. leveling up.

I’m eager to see an mmorpg implement real world knowledge like math/science. I think there’s a tremendous untapped potential here that’s profound. Perhaps the amount of real world knowledge in mmorpgs is proportional to the number of math grads in the united states.

It’s not just math, it’s everything. Real life knowledge and skills, I believe, are possible to improve in MMORPGs, if the right company comes along with the right chemistry. If people are going to waste time online, you might as well make it more productive. I don’t think you can stop it. If you can’t beat em, “join” em.
