The LXD Episode 3: Robot Love Story (mini-review)

Posted on July 13, 2010 by

While episode 1 focused on b-boying, and episode 2 featured kung-fu / parcour, episode 3 of the web dance series "The League of Extraordinary Dancers" turned to the precise and less flashy danceform known as "popping." The main character in this episode is "Sp3cimin," played by robotic dancer "Madd" Chadd Smith.

The popping that Chadd and the other dancers do in this episode is pretty incredible, and so well filmed.  The black suits against the white backgrounds really accentuate the other-ness of their movement, and the crispness of their form.  Chadd really does look like something alien and mechanical throughout.  I could watch the popping / tutting sequence that begins at the 7:45 over and over again. So sick.

I liked that this episode featured no dialogue, the story being told
mostly through comic book like letters appearing on the screen.  This
let you focus on the movement and the dancing more fully, I feel.

Don't know how I feel about the female popper.  I kept wondering that if she was fleeing, why was she dancing in her apartment?  I guess it was to emphasize that she was just like Chadd's character, but it seems odd to me.

Other than that, really great episode!
