On Friday, some friends and I are going on a holiday bike ride around San Francisco, something I have been wanting to do for awhile. I’m super excited about exploring my city and seeing the pretty displays. But honestly, it’s just a good excuse for me to decorate my bike with festive lights!
You have probably seen online amazing examples of bikes lit up by el wire. Burning Man is famous for the elaborate human-powered vehicles that people decorate with all manner of lights and fanciness. I wanted to see if I could put el wire on my folding Brompton bike without compromising its folding ability.
This weekend, following these instructions (with some modifications), I worked on installing two sets of el wire to my Brompton’s little wheels. Honestly, it took me a couple of hours to do, mostly because I’m not a handy person. The hardest part was figuring out how to securely mount the battery pack as near to the hub of the wheel as I could. After that, it was just a matter of threading the el wire around both wheels a couple of times, and tying it down with zip ties.
I’m pretty happy with the results!
I’m sure you can get much more creative with your el wire stringing. But I wanted to do the most basic version and see how it does on a ride.
