Mexican tortas are one of my favorite sandwiches in the world. Something about the combination of latin-style meats, veggies and cheese on a toasted bun just works.
La Fonda in the Inner Sunset is one of the better Mexican spots in the area, with the usual assortment of burritos and tacos, and some atypical offerings like chilaquiles. And they have a nice assortment of tortas on offer: salchicha con huevo, milanesa, cochinita pibil, and their flagship torta, la cubana.
This Dagwood of a sandwich includes a fried beef cutlet, ham slices, turkey franks, eggs, melted cheese, avocado, lettuce and tomato, and pickles on a large toasted bun. I ate half for lunch and half for dinner was stuffed for both meals. A little over $8, this a great meal deal.
My second favorite torta is the cochinita pibil — basically a pulled pork sandwich done Mexican-style. But all of them I found tasty and good value.
