Today was the 33rd annual Five Boro Bike Tour, the largest group biking event in the country at 32,000 riders. Crossing into all five boroughs of the city of New York, it's a wonderful celebration of New York and biking that brings together a wide assortment of bike enthusiasts, from little kids to grey-haired cyclists. Just checking out all the awesome wheeled self-powered vehicles that people ride is half the fun, from tandem recumbent bikes to unicycles to the latest Italian racers.
This is my third 5 boro bike tour, and it was definitely my best experience yet. The weather was perfect, I had wonderful riding companions (co-workers Amira and Krista and Amira's friends Dan and Veronica), the ride went off without any significant snafus, and everyone I met on the ride was in good spirits.
I also think I'm in the best physical shape to do the ride, really enjoying pretty much the entire trip from beginning to end. In past years, I've struggled with the final hour or so from the BQE to the Verrezano Bridge. But this year, I pretty much breezed through all of it without significant strain.
I took a bunch of video from my bike, which I'll be assembling at some point. Not tonight, cause I am totally wiped. But here's a little taste of what the opening line-up was like at 6:30am after the jump…
Great!! it looks like as if a bike marathon is being organized here.
