First day in DC: Obama-mania is in full effect

Posted on January 18, 2009 by

Inauguration Souvenirs
I just arrived in Washington DC for the presidential inauguration festivities.  Here's what I encountered at Union Station when I got off the bus.  This souvenir stand had an impressive array of Obama-stuff on sale, from posters to buttons, tee-shirts, flags, postcards, and baby bibs. This guy tried to charge me $1 to take this picture, but I wasn't having it.

Our bus passed several more Obama souvenir stands like this one along the way.

I rode here on Washington Deluxe, a local Brooklyn operation that goes from my hood to Dupont Circle (with a few stops in between).  My bus ride was very smooth and efficient, and we encountered no significant traffic delays between New York and DC.  I even had two seats to myself.

I'm looking forward to the Martin Luther King Jr. festivities tomorrow and the presidential inauguration on Tuesday.  Meanwhile, tonight I'm hanging out with my friend Tony and his wife Laure in their lovely home in Laurel, Maryland.

Thanks for the update, Rik. I watched the concert on the Mall yesterday, live on HBO, after meeting for worship. There’ve been a lot of inaugurations in my lifetime, but I don’t remember anything like this.

have fun at the inauguration! If you can get your hands on an extra copy of the Obama Spiderman issue, we’d love to have it 🙂 We bought Sarah an Obama tshirt when we were in NYC and she’s been wearing it ever since… There’s even Obamania over here in Holland, we have several inauguration parties to choose from
