My curiosity about the latest installment of the "High School Musical" series got the better of me this weekend. The first theatrical release in the series, "High School Musical III" had the highest weekend opening gross of any movie musical EVER, if you can believe it.
What can I say? The acting is strictly "afternoon TV special" cheesiness. The plot is boilerplate teen love story angst. The music is completely forgettable pop drivel that you will forget almost immediately after the credits roll.
But if you like movie musicals, you will find "High School Musical III" charming and cute. There are some well-done set pieces, particularly the basketball game, Sharpay’s and Ryan’s dream sequence, Zac and Chad’s junkyard scene, and of course the closing graduation number. I was kind of intrigued by the flipping back and forth between the stage production and the "real life" high school (which also was very set-like.)
That said, I’m not going to tell you to spend $15 to see this in the theater, unless:
- you enjoy watching not-very-good movies ironically,
- you are a 13-year old girl,
- or you are a gay man with a crush on Ryan.
Last thought: this really really needs to be done as a Bollywood extravaganza.
