Last night at the Machinima Festival after-party at Eyebeam labs we were treated to the unique 8-bit DJ stylings of Ms. Haeyoung Kim, better known as Bubblyfish. I’ve seen Bubblyfish a couple of times before and have been blown away by her retro gaming-influenced electronica.
Bubblyfish’s performances combine wonderfully retro imagery from old 8-bit games like "ET" for the Atari 2600 with lush and infectuous electronica created using a hacked Gameboy. It’s fun watching her perform — she bounces around, throws her hands up, and bobs her head around as she manipulates her Gameboy and deck. So geekcrush-able.
Bubblyfish’s first two albums are available on www.retinascan.de and she is included as part of the "8-bit Operators" compilation CD.
