At breakdance practice last night, I was talking with Waleed, another dancer who told me about a real cool film project he is involved with. "Sling Shot Hip Hop" is a film about the role of hip hop music for Palestinians as a form of political expression:
Slingshot Hip Hop braids together the stories of young Palestinians
living in the West Bank, Gaza and inside Israel as they discover Hip
Hop and employ it as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation
and poverty. From internal checkpoints and Separation Walls to gender
norms and generational differences, this is the story of young people
crossing the borders that separate them.
If you want to catch it, check the website for showtimes. It’s playing this Thursday and Friday at the URBANWORLD Film Festival in New York City.
