This is a pretty useless tutorial on how to eat a stroopwafel cookie, which in my estimation is the finest baked good ever created. YMMV.
I apologize ahead of time if you are nowhere near a place that sells stroopwafel. Awhile ago, I saw a Starbucks selling them in New York. I suppose you could get them online, but I don’t know anything about that.

Wonderful! Rik introduced me to stroopwafels when we roomed together – awesome stuff! good cookie!” (with their obligatory toned-down graphic design treatments). They’ll sell like, well, hotcakes!
If they’re selling them, Starbucks should use the tagline “That is a
Hmmmm – that was supposed to be “(expletive)” in that tagline. So much for comedy.
I have had these before! (Good friends live in Amsterdam every summer…) I saw them recently at Whole Foods, and locally at my imported grocery store in the Slope. Must resist temptation to get them. Soooo good.
heh, this is the best blog entry I’ve read all week. Great video. I love Holland, I love stroop and I’ve never known the correct way to eat stroopwafel. Thanks Rik 🙂
“That’s a &*%! good cookie.”
How does that translate into Dutch?
BTW, they sell organic ones at the Korean Superstore in Queens. Kimchee and stroopwafflen. What a combo.
I’m glad you all enjoyed it!
“That’s a &*%! good cookie.”
Dutch translation:
“Dat is een verdomd lekker koekje.”
The best way to eat a stroopwafel is at a stroopwafel stand, when the wafel is still warm. Yum, must go to the market soon to get one.
The Master of Disaster wrote a good article on this! Kinda takes the piss out of you, but he’s a big stroopwafel fan 😛
The article is located at http://www.mod.lyp.nl
Wow. Simply wow.
I live in Holland so I can hook you up if you want stroopwafels.
Het zijn de beste koeken op aarde.
I have lived here for two years and it is my personal quest to find THE best stroopwafel. The ones from AC are pretty dang good, but there is a small bakery in Helmersbuurt that has my vote. I’ve formed addicts by sending them as Christmas presents!
Xanna, thanks for the tip. I must go to Helmersbuurt!
Where is a stand in Amsterdam that sells them fresh?
lol never knew this. I’ve seen them in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the Four Friends Cafe, they pronounced them just like an American would read it. I live in NL for 8-9 years now so I know them and enjoy them ^^
Wow, we need a google map of where you can find stroopwafel in the US!
haha
I’m dutch (where the stroopwafels come from)
and we don’t eat them like that 😉
we just eat them the way you got the from the pacckage.
the best way to eat them is when the just came out of the pan they’re made in still warm and soft 😉
I’m from the Netherlands too, and we DO eat them like that, Sanne 😉 It’s just that it’s not the only option. Best stroopwafels are the ones you can get at the market stall, fresh and goopy and nasty and AWESOME. Then there’s storebought, which are indeed better after they’ve been warmed up than straight out of the package.
My only problem is that once I’ve had one, I kinda have to finish the entire pack. My body doth not celebrate the finest cookie ever devised by man, unlike my brain, which is, right now, devising a way of getting more stroopwafels.
Eh, I’ll settle for a stroopkoek 😉
Wow thanks
My cricket team were given 10 each by a Dutch touring side ‘Rooden Wit’ and I have eaten 8 so far straight out of the package I’ll try this method as soon as possible
STROOPWAFELS ARE THE BEST! thank you so much for your wonderfull video and promoting our little dutch treat.. they are soooo delicious! I’m from holland and eat them alotttttt…whoehoeee stroopwafels rule the planet!
Best wishes, sascha (from holland)
LOL. Glad you liked the video!
I love stroopwafels so much! I totally forgot about this way to eat them, so I’m going to bu another pack tomorrow to eat them warm again.
Last month I was at a festival interviewing bands, and everytime when the question ‘what is the best thing about holland’ was asked, stroopwafels wat the anserw xD
Good call on putting them on your coffee cup. I usually put them in the microwave, but your method is way better. I can get them here in Vancouver, but they’re not very fresh. boo hoo
Hi Americans,
Glad to hear that you like our stroopwafels. But the stroopwafel isn’t the only Dutch delicacy. Also try our Frikadel and Kroket, two delicious meat snacks. See Wikipedia for more info about them. If you’re in Holland, try these snacks. You can get them at every snack bar. We Dutch eat them at least one time a week and we love them!
I’m sorry, it’s a Frikandel isntead of a Frikadel. A Frikadel is some kind of Danish meatball.
I love krokets!
My boyfriend who lives in the Netherlands sent me some … I’m about to try them for the first time. 😀 I don’t like hot beverages though 🙁
Ja, ik lief het stroopwafel. So much that I bought a stroopwafel iron and a 220volt converter so that I could make them myself. There have been many different style and recipies tried and many other things tried that were non-traditional like the sour creme raspberry wafel. Geel goed. My kids even like them with anise in them, but i’ll leave the anise to the pans of tai-tai when I’m in the mood. Eat them anyway that brings you joy. If I am among friends and good company, I will “steep” them on the top of my koffie. If I am looking for a quick snack, i will eat straight out of the container/fridge. Also it is fun to quickly dip your speculaas cookies in a cup of orange pekoe tea (but not too long or they turn to a mush in the bottom of your cup. If you need a lesson, ask your Pake or Beppe.
Here’s where you can get stroopwafels this year: TRADER JOE’S! I just bought 10 tins of them, as presents. They’re in a snowflake-decorated can, so they may just be a holiday special.
Guys, if you don’t like hot beverages or don’t have the patience to wait for 4 minutes, you can just put it in the microwave for 15 seconds or so. Yumyum nice n melty nomnom!
Stroopwafels ruleee!!
I got back from Amsterdam a week ago, and I miss the Stroopwafels! I didn’t bring home anywhere near enough. I ate most of them before I got off the plane.
IK
You’re totally right about the finest cookie ever devised by man!
You should really try a “Kaassoufflé” when you’re in Holland. It’s a layer of cheese surrounded with a thin layer of puff pastry with some fine breadcrumbs all over the place. Just fry (deep frying that is) the “Kaassoufflé” for a few minutes and the cheese will melt. It’s so delicious.

I’m hungry now 🙁
I just had these for the first time tonight. A friend sent some to me.
We ate them with whipped cream (homemade, fresh) and strawberries – that was wonderful!
We’ll try the hot beverage trick tomorrow!
that is a fucking good cookie.
My family makes these every year for Christmas gifts. They are damn good fresh! I can’t bring myself to eat ones that are bought at the stores…and starbucks?!!! just yuck! We make a huge batch on the day after Thanksgiving and then freeze them. They’re great this way…frozen! But if you want the gooey syrup fast…pop one in the microwave for a few seconds….bliss!
that’s so funny, i live in holland for all my life and i have eaten so much stroopwafels that i don’t have to eat them for the rest of my life, but i’ve NEVER heard of putting the stroopwafel on your warm beaverage. that’s a GREAT idea by the way, so i’m gonna spread the word to the rest of holland!
I am a Dutchman living in the USA and making fresh, made-to-order Dutch stroopwafels. I use the original Dutch recipe with an authentic stroopwafel iron and with a delicious thick carmel filling. Please check out my website at http://www.HungryDutchMen.com

Hi 🙂 I live in the Netherlands, and I think stroopwafels are the best cookies of the world 😛
(I love the way you call stroopwafels, stroopwafels :P)
I also like your video, but the best way to eat a stroopwafel, well what I think is the best way, is to put a stroopwafel on a plate, and put in a microwave for a couple of seconds. You can see when it’s ready when the stroopwafel is broken apart, and the stroop is popping out of the wafel.
(sorry, my english isn’t that well, I hope you understand it)
I had my first stroopwafel the other day and I am unfortunately, hooked! They are amazing. Thanks for showing me the proper way to eat them, now for sure I can’t stop!!!
again , Holland is not the same as the netherlands.
as if all americans are from alabama.
two more things; there is a band called the amazing stroopwafels , bet it there on y tube.
The best know real dutch traditional food is a hemaworst.
It should be a Cookie Monster who explains how to Eat Cookie!
Omg… they look freakin’ LUSH! :’))
The best stroopwaffles I ever had were at the Schipol Amsterdam Hilton hotel. They put 2 large ones in the rooms. Tried them with hot sweet coffee and I was hooked. I am on a quest now to duplicate them.
I’ve found the link of this film on a site of a friend of mine who was in the states for a couple of months. I’m from the Netherlands but never heard of way “how to eat a stroopwafel”…
well… I think its great! thanks for the great suggestion! but don’t eat too much… they make you fat 😛
haha
greetings from Holland!
You could also just eat it…
The music is Alley Cat, not Good Grief. Loved the video, otherwise.
I normally always heat them in the microwave for about 10 sec, but this is indeed a great option when you don’t have one at hand. thanks Rik 🙂
Oh yeah, whenever you happen to be in Holland, make sure to try a kroket, like the comment above already mentioned. It’s goood!
Ok, someone left some on my boat. They have been here for months. At least I now know what to do. Thanks! I may come back with thoughts, but thanks for helping me out and encouraging me to try them.
My now husband who is Dutch introduced me to stroopwafels when we met overseas and he brought them to give out. At our wedding, we gave out stroopwafels in the blue and white tins as favors. You can find them at Trader Joe’s these days.
Great tutorial! I’m linking to it in on my site :). I love stroopwafels so much! The melty deliciousness. You are right… it is a f%&king good cookie 😀
OMG. My friends (Timo Descamps and Danny De Jong) just brought over the stroopwafels. I thought nothing of it and put it in the fridge. And although that was WRONG. It was soo good. Now I only have eight left, and I must ration what is left of this amazing StroopWafel with a nice cup of tea.
THANK YOU!!!
