Second Life Architecture Awards – Vote for your favorite build!

The First Annual Second Life Architecture
and Design Competition
has settled on the finalists for their competition, and now they are throwing it open to the public at large to vote for the winner online.  The four finalists all look incredible to me, just from the screenshots, but you really have to see them in-world to  judge them properly.  The finalists are:

  • Meylenstein (Tanja Meyle): "Living Cloud" (No SLURL. IM "Creatina Ferraris" to check it out.)
  • Max Moswitzer: "Whitenoise" (teleport SLURL)
  • Adam Nash: "Seventeen Unsung Songs" (teleport SLURL)
  • DC Spensley: "Hyperformalism"(teleport SLURL)

It’s awesome seeing skilled designers and architects pushing the envelope in what is possible in virtual worlds. Really, do we need more exact replicas of real world buildings in Second Life? The challenge it seems to me is to create structures that provide enough visual cues for people to be able to use and navigate within them efficiently while also exploiting fully the potentials offered by a completely digital, plastic space.  And then how does that inform how we imagine and create real life spaces and structures?

Just so you know, the winners receive the following fabulous prizes:

  1. Fame! The winners will receive a worldwide exposure!
  2. The projects were already presented at the Ars Electronica festival (Sept.
5th – 11th, 2007) in Linz Austria, where the jury was held.
  3. The winners will be honoured in an official prize ceremony at the UNESCO World
Cultural Heritage Zollverein Essen on October 25.
  4. The results of the competition will be documented in a book which will be published
by Prestel publishers in spring 2008.
  5. The winning projects will be promoted worldwide and presented in a Hall of
Fame on the internet – and in Second Life.

Online judging closes soon on October 23, so get those votes in!
