Gilson Schwartz send me more details on the "Cidade do Conhecimento" / "City of Knowledge" conference happening in Brazil today, which I had blogged about earlier:
The City of Knowledge is a research group at the Dept. of Film, Radio
and TV of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. We´ve been into
web-related research since 1999, while I started in the net back in
1996…. The event on the 28th is a one-day assembly of companies, institutions,
fellows in research and activists who all wish to build a non-profit SL
area in Brazil. This is the first initiative along these lines and is
causing quite a thrill with very enthused support from private sector
as well as gov and org alliances.
After the fold is Gilson’s complete message. The event is all day from 2AM-5PM PST at this SLURL. Check out the full schedule of events, looks quite fascinating…

SL is a new opportunity for us to do research and development in Brazil. I am sorry for the paucity of information in English, we´ve been trying our best to connect with the international community, but translation always comes at a cost…
Anyway, the SL launch will be quite an international event, with research partners from France (Le Cube and University of Paris 3), Japan and fellows in the US from Columbia (NY), Seattle and most decisively, USC, actually a partner/mentor in this new endeavour.

On the other hand, there is no "city", so to speak, built in any specific place, in a literal sense (this is part of the proposition, of course). We start with this event on th 28th, in a Brazilian island (donatio by the owners, Kaizen Games and iG, an internet provider) and sharing space with USC.
DIfferent local, popular and experimental groups are willing to join and the event is also part of the fundraising so as to make this whole territory come true.
