PlanetThoughts Raymaker sent me a press release about a group of environmentalists and green businesses in SL that will be participating in Earth Day this April 22:
The Environmental Council of Second Life
and the Luna Bliss company announce the first mainstream Earth Day celebrated
in Second Life… There will be talks by environment experts, live concerts, guided and self-guided walk-through exhibits, and more. A list of participating organizations can be seen at the PlanetThoughts.org Web site, and a detailed schedule of events will follow in the next week.
I did a quick visit to the in-world offices of the participating groups, many of whom have set up "campsites" on the heavily forested Commonwealth Island (pictured above) including Clean Energy Now, the Climate Change Info Center, Friends of GreenPeace, Forces of Nature and Envirolink.org. Other participants spread out around the grid include the French sustainable development sim
Baobab, the Bliss Garden Center, the Center for Water Studies, Etopia Eco-Village, Friends of the Urban Forest, Mystic Academy, the amazing US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) sim, the Northwest Solar Center and PlanetThoughts.org.

Earth Day is a good concept. Very good for the world to get involved. I know my place of employment is doing a lot this week and hopefully into the future to improve our recycling.
