Just got word from Aaron Forge that the wheels of justice are finally grinding their way towards the Gift Assistant company.
The Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro just announced that he wants the Ohio-based Gift Assistant to refund the money to all of its defrauded customers and to pay a fine of $25,000 for each unfulfilled transaction. According to the Inquirer, Petro filed a lawsuit
asking a judge to order the Gift Assistant to "cease
violating the Ohio Consumer Sales Practices Act." The suit alleges that the Gift
Assistant used "unfair and deceptive methods" to take at least $42,000
from at least 250 people.
I told my own story of woe back in August. But back then it looked like the authorities weren’t going to pursue the matter. Nice to finally see some government action on this.
Thanks for the heads up, Aaron!
UPDATE 8/6/08: The attorney General of Ohio has contacted me about filling out an affidavit in the case of The State of Ohio vs. The Gift Assistant. Looks like something is proceeding on this. Interesting.
