Cool dude Nobody Fugazi offered up his house in Second Life to hang out and chat during the 2006 World Cup match today. Not as good as watching in a crowded bar of football fans, but better than watching alone.
Unfortunately no one got the rights to re-broadcast the World Cup in-world, like the simultaneous in-world broadcast of the space shuttle launch last week or the Major League Baseball event next week. So folks were watching along on their TVs as we chatted.
Events like the World Cup and the Olympics are really perfect for viewing in Second Life. With the increasing internationalization of the resident population, you could be hanging out in a virtual bar with folks from all over the world while you are watching a match. (Of course then you would have to worry about virtual hooligans / griefers.)
It’s really the kind of global gathering that formerly was only
possible for people who could afford to go to the actual event that is
now available to a much wider audience using MUVEs like SL.
Thanks, Nobody! Nice place you got there!
