Just got an email from an ad rep for a company called Point of Impact Inc. an “e-business company, focused on the promotion and development of internet properties.” Which I guess is another euphemism for for “disseminator of spam.” The rep wanted to pay me up front to put up some text ads on my site pointing to other websites, which seemed like a reasonable deal.
But when I asked him what the nature of the sites were, they were all splogs (advertising posing as a blog). I could give you the URLs, but that would just increase their hit count, which is exactly what I don’t want. I don’t mind sending click-throughs to businesses I like: Amazon, iTunes, Small Dog, Think Geek, etc. But I don’t want to be even marginally responsible for search engines treating spam blogs as legitimate content and thus increasing their relevance scores on Google and other engines.
I guess I will take it as a compliment that my lil blog is attracting the attention of spammers. Woo hoo, I’m being coopted.
Nice blog, good arguements, thanks
