I never intended this blog to be the disseminator of knowledge about scam emails purporting to be from the United Nations. And yet, that has become by far my largest “audience” from looking at my stats.
I just found another warning from a UN agency about these scam emails, this one from UNAIDS:
Various scam emails purporting or implying to be from or associated with UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, have been circulating on the Internet. Some of these emails request detailed information and/or money from individuals, businesses or non-profit organizations with the promise that they will receive funds or other benefits in return.
Other emails ask for registration fees for conferences allegedly sponsored by UNAIDS and for hotel reservations, again with the promise of certain benefits. These emails sometimes carry the UNAIDS logo, and emanate from or refer to an email address which is made to look like a United Nations address.
These emails do not emanate from UNAIDS, and are not in any way associated with UNAIDS projects or events. UNAIDS wishes to warn the public of these misleading practices, and suggests that recipients of invitations such as those described above (whether sent by email or communicated in any other way) verify their authenticity before sending any response.
In particular, UNAIDS suggests that recipients do not send money or personal information in response to invitations from anyone who claims to be awarding funds, grants, scholarships, certificates, lottery winnings, or prizes, and/or who requests payment for registration fees and hotel rooms reservations, in the name of UNAIDS.
If you have any doubts about the authenticity of an email, letter or phone call purportedly from, for or on behalf of UNAIDS, please email us at unaids@unaids.org. UNAIDS is trying to put a halt to these misleading practices, and we would therefore greatly appreciate your help in bringing suspect communications to our attention.
So there you go. Yet another trap for gullible internauts. You’ve been warned.
I just received one of those emails, I’m sending the link to you.
Dear
As a follow up to my previous correspondence(s) regarding the job opportunity with UNAIDS, I write to intimate you on some vital issues about this project. My name is Anderson Lucas as you already know and I am an Affiliate with the United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS[UNAIDS] here in UK. My duties are to coordinate the joint humanitarian efforts of the UNAIDS partner groups in UK and USA; and also supervise the disbursement of donations received on behalf of the UNAIDS. Thank you for your response to our mail and your willingness to be part of this great humanitarian initiative which has brought hope to millions of HIV/AIDS victims worldwide.
Your work assignment is to process donations received on behalf of the United Nations program on HIV/AIDS. The UN program on HIV/AIDS is facing difficulties receiving donations from donor-companies in the USA because of the restriction associated with checks going out of the United States, as well as for tax reasons. Donations made outside the US by these donor-companies are taxed. Donations made within the US are exempted from Tax. Because of this, many prospective donor-companies decline from making donations to the program even after they have expressed their willingness to partner with us.
In a bid to combat this dreaded disease which will be impossible without the contributions and donations from these companies and institutions, we devised to employ part-time General Service representatives to assist us receive and process these donations and also make income for themselves. Processing means to receive the donations from the donors by wire transfer, have it sent out to beneficiaries as would be directed by this office. This appointment will not conflict with your present job or employment (if any) as you will always be notified ahead of time before the donations are made. Beneficiaries includes:
[a]. People living with HIV/AIDS
[b]. UNIADS Affiliates worldwide working with the UN on HIV/AIDS.

Once a donation has been processed by you and the beneficiary determined, we shall notify you by email and also give you detailed and explicit instructions on the disbursement of the donation. It is rather very simple but fulfilling. For your rewards, the UNIADS will pay you $1,800 monthly from the day the first donation is received and also 10% of every donation you receive on our behalf. You will have to deduct your 10% commission from every donation you receive.
