Oakland Living: Fancy Coffee, Korean Noodles, and a Confused Cat

Posted on October 3, 2011 by

This weekend I moved into my new one bedroom apartment in Oakland in the lovely Temescal neighborhood. It's a great and cheap pad with a good size living room, full kitchen and bath that would have cost at least $500 more in SF.  It's very conveniently located, just a few minutes walk from a BART…

Getting Steampunky at the Handcar Regatta

Posted on September 26, 2011 by

My friend Jeskat and I headed off yesterday to catch the Great Handcar Regatta in Santa Rosa, California.  Centered around a race on old railroad tracks of a crazy assortment of human-powered vehicles, the Handcar Regatta has grown over the past four years into a huge festival of steampunk-inspired fashion, vehicles, artwork and more.

FreePlay Dance Crew “Route 66” Routine at Central Market Arts Fair (video)

Posted on September 26, 2011 by

Here's a video snippet from the "Route 66" routine that I performed with the FreePlay Dance Crew this past Saturday at the Central Market Arts Fair in downtown San Francisco.  It's missing a few counts of the opening, but otherwise this is the whole routine. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as…

Dancing with FreePlay Crew at the Central Market Arts Fair

Posted on September 25, 2011 by

Today I performed with the FreePlay Dance Crew at the Central Market Arts Fair in downtown San Francisco for a crowd of about 50 passersby.  This was the culmination of just four weeks of work together, twice a week.  And yet, I think we put together a fun, entertaining and unique "fusion" dance piece. It…

Me Rocking Out at the Gatsby Summer Afternoon Dance (video)

Posted on September 21, 2011 by

Someone tipped me off about this tiny video clip of me solo charlestoning at the Gatsby Summer Afternoon dance from a couple of weeks ago.   It's always funny to run across random videos of yourself dancing!  I almost manage to avoid doing any hip-hop until the final second. LOL.

The 27th Annual Gatsby Summer Afternoon: A Festive, Swinging Celebration of a Simpler Time

Posted on September 12, 2011 by

On Sunday (September 11, of all days!) I had the pleasure of spending a lovely day at the 27th Annual "Gatsby Summer Afternoon" picnic sponsored by the Art Deco Society of California.  The Gatsby Summer Afternoon is a lavish celebration of a bygone era, with a couple of hundred dedicated fans of the styles and…

The Dancer’s Den Brings the Swing to Berkeley

Posted on September 8, 2011 by

Last night I had the pleasure of going to the Dancer's Den in downtown Berkeley. The Dancer's Den is a weekly lindy hop dance venue with classes and open social dancing organized by UC Berkeley alums James McBryan, Joleigh Davis, Jean Ma, and Bromley Palamountain. Held in the elegant Berkeley City Club, it's a great place…

I am happy to share that a really beautiful new mural on a pro-migrant social justice theme is being officially unveiled on Friday August 26 in downtown San Francisco.  On the northern wall of the San Francisco Quaker Meetinghouse, the new mural is called "67 Sueños" (67 dreams).  Created by muralist Pancho Pescador in collaboration…

Tamar Korn and the Gauchos at Cafe Pascucci (video)

Posted on August 15, 2011 by

Here's the amazing Tamar Korn singing with the Gauchos band at Cafe Pascucci in SOMA last Saturday. It was a really fun night with folks just packed in who came to hear Gauchos play, as well as a dozen or so lindy hoppers who came to dance. There was a super tiny dance floor…

Tamar Korn with the Gauchos Last Night at Amnesia Bar: Jazz Bliss! (video)

Posted on August 11, 2011 by

I'm still kvelling from the amazing two sets of music performed last night by the Gauchos jazz band playing with the incomparable jazz singer Tamar Korn at Amnesia Bar in the Mission.  The Gauchos always put on an amazing gig, which SF lindy hoppers and jazz heads have known about for awhile.  But with…
