I danced at the Apollo with Sharon Jones!

Posted on October 6, 2007 by

I just got back from an incredible concert by the soul super-group Sharon Jones and the Dap-kings at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. I had been looking forward to seeing Sharon Jones for awhile, after hearing my friend Zev talk about how amazing her concerts are.

By chance, I managed to get front row seats to her show. And when Ms Jones came on stage I immediately jumped up and started dancing, along with much of the crowd in the Apollo that night.  Sharon is a tiny lady, but she commanded the stage as soon as she sauntered out.  A consummate entertainer, she belted, danced, and worked the crowd like an old pro.  I was mesmerized.

During a particularly funky number, Sharon walked over to my side of the stage and invited me up.  I started doing my popping and locking thing, which wowed both her and the crowd, apparently.  Because a couple of songs later, she called me up on stage to dance again!

After the concert, lots of folks were congratulating me and asking me if I was a "professional."  My friends were so proud of me, saying that they yelled themselves hoarse while I was onstage. Definitely one of my best moments as a dancer, ever.
