I know I am like 10 years too late to the party. But near as I can tell, the Jazz Mafia is a collective of possibly hundreds of talented musicians, MCs, and DJs under the leadership of Adam Theis, who configure themselves in various groupings to throw down everything from classical to hip-hop to swing. They are like the what I might dream up if I wanted to form the ideal band for what I like to listen and dance to.
I had the pleasure of catching their "Shotgun Wedding Quintet" configuration last Saturday at the Mezzanine. They were celebrating the release of their new CD "Tales from the Barbary Coast" and backing up the incredible MC Gift of Gab of the group Blackalicious! It was a totally amazing concert that my ears are still ringing from.
I am kicking myself that I missed them the next day performing with my favorite MC ever Chali 2na! Argg.
Anyway, if you are in New York City, you should catch these cats on July 2 at Summer Stage! Should be a dope concert.
