Yesterday, I and a colleague did a quick trip up to Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, California, to scout out the site of a bio-blitz we are organizing for a group of students later in the month. We were fortunate to come across a couple of what we think were rough-skinned newts just hanging out on some pieces of wood.
A sign created by a group of third graders warned visitors to be on the lookout for newts, which might be hanging out during the rainy season. It was indeed raining when we were there, which was a bummer. But catching these rare creatures made it worth it!
It's going to be fun coming back with a group of excited young people so they can make their own discoveries.
