Tomorrow, September 10, is the “White Band Day” to combat poverty, sponsored by the Global Call to Action against Poverty. Groups from around the world are organizing demonstrations to urge governments to do more to end poverty. In New York there’s going to be a large “White Band” contingent at the annual Labor Day parade planned down 44th Street.
Although there are some 15,000 groups around the world that are part of the Global Call to Action against Poverty, in the US it has received scant public attention. I have been wearing my white band since February, and no one yet has correctly identified what it is for.
The goal of White Band Day is to pressure world leaders gathering for the UN General Assembly starting the following week to make solid commitments to end grinding poverty and hunger around the world.
See whiteband.org to find out if there is an event being organized near you.
