Last Thursday Jan Elliason, president of the General Assembly, issued a new draft resolution on the proposed UN Human Rights Council that he and the UN Secretary General hope will be adopted by the General Assembly this coming week.
Several NGOs, including the group I work for CONGO as well as the International Federation of Human Rights have issued statements of support for the new proposal.
I’ve argued that the UN should scrap the Commission on Human Rights since its become more and more a shield for countries to continue to violate their citizen’s rights rather than a stick prodding them to do better. Let’s hope that the Human Rights Council gets us closer to a system that really can promote and defend human rights around the world.
