The advocacy group Free Press has just launched a "Save the Internet" campaign website, as a major public push in support of the "Network Neutrality" principle. The campaign coalition believes:
the Internet is a crucial engine for economic growth and
democratic discourse. We are working together to urge Congress to take
steps now to preserve network neutrality, the First Amendment for the
Internet that ensures that the Internet remains open to innovation and
progress. From its beginnings, the Internet has leveled the
playing field for all comers. Everyday people can have their voices
heard by thousands, even millions of people. The SavetheInternet.com
Coalition — representing millions of Americans from all walks of life
— is working together to ensure that Congress passes no
telecommunications legislation without meaningful and enforceable
network neutrality requirements.
On the site, you can learn about the Net Neutrality principle, send a message to your congresspeople telling them that you support an open and democratic internet, find out where various legislators stand on the issue via an interactive map, join a growing coalition of groups, and stay updated via their blog.
An enormous range of groups have already endorsed the effort, from Moveon.org, to the Gun Owners of America, the American Library Association, Afro-netizen, and the Consumer Federation of America.
I’ve blogged previously about Net Neutrality.
