I’ve been getting lots of responses from people who have also received these fake emails from groups pretending affiliation with the United Nations. A nice person forwarded to me all of the documents and communications that she received when she applied for a job with the “US Committee for the UN.” She notes that after she applied for one of the jobs, she received the following response:
Dear Applicant, As a furtherance to your Application, you are directed to download the attached forms(Employment & Interview),complete them and send back to us ASAP as recruitment processes had already begun. This will enable us to know more of you pending further questions via telephone or online job interview if we consider necessary. We look forward to receiving the completed forms from you at the very earliest.
Sincerely Yours, Dr. David Cameron
Attached to this email were an “employment form” and “interview form.” After responding to that email, she soon received another reply. Apparently, surprise, she got the job!
Dear [person’s name],
Following your successful employment with US COMMITTEE for UN ,you will find attached our offer letter, contract agreement and alien employment authorisation form. Please execute the items, complete and return the 2 forms within 3 working days to enable us conclude all other matters relating to your
employment/training. Printout and fill sections 1- 2 of the attached form , scan and send filled form as an attachment(JPEG) with a passport photograph attached to it.We would file a Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker (Form I-129) with the U.S. epartment of Homeland Security (DHS). Beneficiaries of approved petitions receive a Notice of Approval (Form I-797) from DHS that must be submitted as part of the H1B visa application
Do accept our hearty congratulations.
Regards, Dr. David Cameron
Attached to this email were a form to get an H1B work visa (which apparently is a real official US government document), a job offer letter, and an employment contract.
The best part is where it details in the job offer letter the salary of the position she applied for:
- Basic Salary 98,250.00 p.a net
- Housing Allowance 39,150.00 p.a net
- Mileage Allowance 19,200.00 p.a net
- Dress Allowance 10,000.00 p.a net
- Lunch Subsidy 8,000.00 p.a.net
- NET TOTAL PAY US$174,600.00
Man, what I would give for a $10,000 “dress allowance” and an $8,000 “lunch subsidy”!!!
If anyone can make heads or tails of this, apparently lots of folks would like to know what the scam is all about.
Also received the same package. There has to be a financial catch somewhere. May be it is a ruse to sue persons for breach of contract or phishing? ISP’s should be compelled to close down scam artists. The ISP to my mind is a party to fraud.
I almost fell victim to these tricksters.I was to transfer some $1870 to Hong Kong for the training preceeding commencement of the job posting in New York as Finance Officer,Level 4.I am sure the crooks can be tracked down using their banking details in Hong Kong.If you are interested I have these.
Regards,
Martin
I was victim of this scam too. Fortunately knowing how the UN works I immediately recognized the trick once they asked me money for training…. anyway the best part was when I reported this to an high ranked UN security officer that I personally know… he’s reaction was “ok, thanks for the info”. As Martin told in his post those crooks could be easily tracked and caught following the bank transfer.
Just want to advise you to leave scammers alone. They use their God given talent to make money, why all these fuss and blabbing and calling them criminals?, what do you have to say about those looking for money where they did not keep as a result falling cheaply into the net. PLEASE LEAVE THE SCAMERS ALONE. George Bush
I also got one of these Good to be true looking mails 🙂
being an Information security guy, first reaction was “is it another scam !!!”
and really it is
FYI , I took out the links to the files, which were being used by scammers to continue to propogate their scams.
Hi
I also got hit by one of these scams – from someone using undg-online email addresses. The internet message header shows a yahoo.com sender address and WHOIS shows the owner of the domain name as Steve someone in Maryland. It did not go as far as asking me to pay money for training or immigration applications. Its a fairly elaborate scam as all the forms I was sent check out as genuine UN ones. A bit disconcerting to think that some ratbag has my CV and employment history now.
