Ok, this is way strange. The hip-hop/pop group the Black Eyed Peas have teamed up with the candy bar Snickers for a web-based action series in which they star as super-heroes who fight against the corporatization of hip-hop. Got all that? Called “Instant Def”, only the trailer and the first episode of the series are currently available. The video aesthetic is somewhere between Grand Theft Auto and the Power Rangers.
The idea of one large multinational corporation sponsoring a series on the dangers of the corporatization of the music industry is very bizarre. It’s like McDonalds sponsoring television ads telling people not to wear Gap jeans.
That said, I love the Black Eyed Peas and probably will tune in for the entire series. I’m not likely to run out and eat a Snickers anytime soon though.
