What do you get when you cross feminist activism and scifi nerdom? Apparently the perfect Friday night entertainment. The fan club the “Browncoats of NYC” have put together a benefit showing of the brilliant 2005 scifi flick “Serenity” at the Cinema Village theater in the East Village this Friday night. But this isn’t just pure geekery: the event is a fundraiser for the women’s empowerment group Equality Now. Why Equality Now? Apparently that is the “Serenity” creator Joss Whedon’s favorite charity.
So there’s an event that combines my love of sci-fi and political activism not very far from me. How could I not go?
Apparently this is part of a larger effort of local Firefly fans around the country to show some love to Joss Whedon on his birthday. Check your local listings.
