I’m in my fourth week of breakdance classes at PMT Studios. It’s a lot of fun and very physically and mentally demanding, as you can imagine. The instructor Pavan Thimmaiah (that’s him on the left) has a gift for taking even the most daunting of dance moves and making them seem do-able for beginners like myself.
Surprisingly, much of the difficulty of learning breakin’ is mental, getting past the self-doubt and fear of injury and embarassment and just going for it. And a lot of the movements are counter-intuitive, even for someone with years of experience with other forms of dance like myself.
Slowly I’m starting to feel more comfortable doing basic top-rocking, floorwork, and freezes. It’s very exciting learning something new!
