My friend Otenth tells me that the religious group the Unitarian Universalists have been building an enormously successful presence in Second Life, their regular gatherings now pushing the limits of the Modesta sim they are in (teleport SLURL). The UUs, as they are affectionately called, have a number of similarities to Quakers, both coming out of liberal, reformist religious motivations, questioning mainline Christian / Protestant doctrines. Our main differences are largely in the practice of our faith rather than doctrine. I.e. UUs sing as part of their services, many Quakers meetings don’t sing communally.
Here’s an interesting video that Tateru points to that connects their cutting-edge digital UU church with much much older communications technologies. Nicely done.
The U*Us, as they are affectionately called, have a number of similarities to Stalinists too. . . Here’s the latest example of Stalinistic U*U intimidation tactics.
