My avatar gets fancy in his new barong tagalog dress shirt

Men’s Second Style, an excellent SL fashion blog, turned me on to these beautiful "barong tagalog" shirts created by designer Shai Delacroix.  I finally got my hands on one tonight and I’m a very happy Fil-Am (Filipino-American) now that my avatar is sporting such a handsome dress shirt.  The barong tagalog is the traditional men’s dress shirt of the Philippines, combining Spanish formal dress and tropical practicality, a very light shirt woven with piña fibers derived from pineapple leaves.

Shai did a lovely job re-creating the look in Second Life, offering an "antique," "ebony" and "ivory" colors, as well as dress pants and an appropriate undershirt to go with it.  Traditionally they are ivory in color, but now you see all sorts of garish combinations and artificial fibers used in modern barongs.

Shai also does wonderful dresses in the style of the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines that would look dazzing at a cotillion or formal ball. Head to Casa del Shai if you would like to check our her fashions (teleport SLURL.) Only L$500 for a complete barong outfit!

Thank you so much for featuring my work on the Barong Tagalogs here. I’m a filipina graphic artist, based in manila and wanted to show our heritage with the traditional costume. I know what you meant with the garish colours. Its like wearing a fiesta banderita. 😉
Kudos to you and your great work too.

    The BarongTagalog

Centuries of Spanish colonial period refined the distinct artistry of the Barong Tagalog, the Philippine National Costume for men. When the Spanish ruling dictated a demarcation against the lowly Indio, Filipinos were made to wear their shirts not tuc…
