Blog aggregator and blogger defender Global Voices recently summarized the bagillion things that they do to fight for the rights of freedom of expression for bloggers around the world. I was tickled by their new "Gallery of National Blockpages" that they have launched with the help of Citizen Lab’s technical research director, Nart Villeneuve. What a cool way to document how government’s are curtailing citizen’s rights to access information.
Pictured above is a blockpage put up by the government of Thailand when anyone tries to access the popular blogging platform WordPress. The page says:
Sorry. TOT Plc., as an organization of Thai people, has
restrained the access to this website as it contains content, text,
and/or picture that is unappropriated which affects the mind of Thai
people all over the country and cannot be accepted.
Check out Global Voices other amazing tools that they offer to fight for blogger freedom:
- A Guide to Anonymous Blogging
- A Wiki to track anti-censorship activities around the world
- "Unfiltered" – an RSS feed of anti-censorship blog posts
- The "403 access denied" tester to find out what sites your country is blocking
Oh and I thought this video was a hilarious way of showing how bloggers united can defeat government censors.
