I just found this event notice on Eventful about the Dutch bank ABN-AMRO recruiting new employees on their Second Life island tomorrow. Several other tech firms like Microsoft and T-mobile have done similar in-world job fairs, which makes sense if they are looking for a particular brand of creative geek.
Which makes me think that Second Life might be a great space for non-profits to hold recruitment fairs. I know of so many people, young and old, who would love to work for a charity or humanitarian aid organization, but don’t know how to get started, or where the opportunities lie. (Note: I give a few tips on NGO work here.) And there are lots of creative types active in SL who have lent their expertise for free or cheap to several charitable efforts like the SL Relay for Life who might be thinking of taking the full-time non-profit plunge.
Even with the groups who are already in-world — including the UN World Food Programme, UNICEF, Global Kids, WWF (formerly the World Wildlife Fund), the ACLU, and Save the Children — we have the basis for a pretty strong job fair. I’m sure there are many other non-profits out there with particular staffing and consultant needs that might get some interesting leads through an in-world job fair, without the expense and hassle of traveling to some physical exhibition hall or university.
Can we do it this or next week? We’re all for it?
