The breakfast dilemma — avoiding insulin shock

Donuts
I’ve been a pretty healthy eater for the eight months or so since I was diagnosed as being on the verge of diabetes.  I have drastically cut down on carbs and sugar, increased my veggie and fruit intake, and decreased my portion sizes to something more manageable by my body. I’ve never felt better.

That said, changing my breakfast routine was a tough part of my new diet.  I love big carb-filled breakfasts — pancakes, french toast, danish, donuts, and big bowls of cereal.  But I’ve switched to plain yogurt with fruit in the morning, which I am reasonably happy with.  The dilemma comes when I’m in a rush and need to grab something fast.

This morning I was running late and didn’t have time to make myself breakfast.  Enroute to the office, I frantically searched for a quick breakfast option that was somewhat healthy. So what did I encounter on the way from the subway and my office?  Three coffee & donut carts, various delis with beautiful pastries on display, a 7/11, and two Dunkin Donuts.  It looked pretty grim on the healthy eating front.

Finally I found one higher-end deli that had yogurt with fruit and granola in a cup for $3.

It’s no wonder we’re such an obese nation.  We’re starting our days with complete crap.

After 26 years as a full blown insulin dependent diabetic, a suggestion: Get yourself to the food store and get a 6/8 pack of the yogurt drinks, perfect for the am rush or the late night “gotta have” snack.
    Love your site.
