The talented Sitearm Madonna sent me info about a cool "Build-a-Robot" challenge that starts now and runs through June 25 at the new Museum of Robots in Second Life (click here to teleport). Although there are cash prizes, it sounds like the contest is mostly about just getting a bunch of people to create fun robot-themed stuff in SL. Here’s the basic parameters:
Museum of Robots in Second Life announces the
‘Build-a-Robot’ Competition, and invites all residents to participate.
All entrants receive a merchandise prize, with an additional 30,000 L$
cash prize pool awarded to the top 10 winners. Our definition of
‘robot’ is unlimited: any design that you think can be called a robot
is acceptable. Entry Classes are: Standalone, Wearable, and Homage to
Classic Robots.

Entry Classes are: Standalone, Wearable, and Homage to
Classic Robots. There is a maximum limit of 100 prims per entry and
entries may be scripted or unscripted. All residents are eligible to
enter, including established designers and new robot builders. The
emphasis is on original creations for the Standalone and Wearable
classes. Homage to Classic Robots is for work that replicates existing
robots or characters from film, television, or media.
Goal
Our goal is to explore what a robot is, how it
can be expressed within the parameters of Second Life, and to encourage
creativity, originality, style and efficient building and scripting
techniques.
Most importantly, this competition should be fun,
encouraging dialogue about robots for those who enter and those who
visit and vote.
Judging
Submissions will be reviewed for compliance
with competition rules, and accepted entries will be displayed at the
Museum of Robots beginning June 28, 2008. Winners will be selected by
panels of judges representing sponsors, designers, and popular choice.
Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at Museum of Robots on
July 19. Entries will remain on display through August.
Prizes
All entrants will receive a robot-themed
merchandise prize folder. An additional 30,000 L$ cash prize pool will
be divided among the top ten winners.
Participation
The competition is open to all
residents of Second Life. There is no fee to enter, and builders can
enter each entry class as long as they meet each class’s criteria.
Winning entries featuring original work will be invited to be made
available for sale in the Museum of Robots Gift Shop.
Deadline
All entries must be submitted by June 25, 2008.
Rules
Competition rules are available at Museum of
Robots and sponsoring locations and on our web site starting May 15,
