My friend Snora posted to Yehoodi this awesome video created by Midus. Without commentary, the eight-minute collection of dance footage shows the parallels between modern b-boy and hip-hop dance and older dance forms — from lindy hop to African dance to Capoeira. You can not miss the progression from one form to another, and you finish the video with a deeper appreciation for the legacy that other dancers and dances have given to urban dance as we know it today. Really remarkable.
This is very cool. It is wonderful how dance can bring people together. Here in Tampa, at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, we are bringing together teens in our city and in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, for a cultural exchange (via video streaming and in Teen Second Life), teaching them hip hop, music, drama, journal writing, etc. We’ve only had one day of the workshop so far and already the kids are bonding. See http://www.kidzconnect.org for blog.
Yeah the virtual world aspect adds a whole other layer to the cultural exchange bit! I love the stuff that Kidz Connect does.
The availability of online video has really changed the nature of vernacular dance from a very localized artform to one informed by dancers from all over the globe watching and learning and copying each other.
