Today’s Meeting for Worship at Brooklyn Quaker Meeting felt so electric and powerful to me. There was a palpable energy in the room that had a dozen people leaping up and sharing vocal ministry that moved me greatly. I’m generally not one who likes a whole lot of vocal ministry, preferring a mostly silent Meeting for Worship, with at most 2-3 messages. But today felt like such a gathered meeting that I hoped it would continue much longer than the one hour allotted to it.
I too felt a message welling up inside me, but didn’t feel like it was ripe enough to share. At Meeting this morning I was able to connect my life as a Quaker and my experience dancing in a way I never have before. I realized that we are called to listen for the Divine and respond to it when we hear it. Sometimes that means that in Quaker Meeting we seek God’s voice and share with other vocally His continuing revelation. And sometimes it means that we listen to a hot lick of jazz or a funky breakbeat in hip-hop and we respond with our bodies. And sometimes it means that we see that of God in another person and we respond with love and compassion toward him.
It’s about living in the moment, paying attention, and letting your heart and soul lead your body. The universe moves to invisible beats and rhythms that flow through us and manifest through our actions in the world. Feel that groove and move.
