Habbo, the largest youth-oriented virtual world on the planet, is asking its millions of members globally to participate in "Earth Hour" — an initiative of the World Wildlife Fund to get one billion people to turn of their lights for an hour at 8:30PM EST on Saturday, March 28. The goal is raise awareness about how we can all fight climate change and make a difference for the environment.
I suppose it is somewhat ironic that young people are being asked to log-in to a virtual world (thereby using electricity) so they can participate in an initiative to turn off their lights (thereby saving electricity.) Then again, I supposed it's about people taking small actions collectively that can be used to generate political will to spur larger actions that governments and corporations should be taking to fight Climate Change. So yeah, I'll be turning off my lights … and logging on.
See the Habbo website for more information on how your cute little 2-D avatar can participate and the official Earth Hour website for your your 3D, not-so-cute biological avatar can too.
