Here’s a late but very sweet entry in the “Global Shim Sham” project for Frankie Manning’s 95th Birthday Festival. Check out this beautiful and amazingly choreographed hula dance version of the “Shim Sham”! Here’s how the dancers described why they put these two seemingly very different dance forms together:
Both hula and swing are living dances, reflecting a range of influences on a base of structured forms. As women who met through Lindy Hop and are now studying hula in the same San Francisco halau, we wanted to pay tribute to one of our main inspirations in swing dancing, Frankie Manning, in a fun, unexpected way. Plus, of course, we are from the Bay Area, and you know that we like to mix things up a little here.
The dancers are Julia, Erin, Cianna, Karen, Cathy, Genevieve, Kirsten and AnnaMarie from San Francisco. Well done, ladies!
