This week the DOT unveiled a lovely new protected bike lane leading from Sands Street in downtown Brooklyn onto the Manhattan Bridge. It goes all the way from Gold Street up to the bike entrance to the Manhattan Bridge.
As someone who rides the Manhattan Bridge nearly every day, I can't tell you how much this improves my commute. For the past six months, that transition from Gold Street to the bridge has been one of the most dangerous and difficult parts of my journey, with rough gravel, crazy traffic, and "creative" bike solutions to various construction barriers in the way.
Now it's just a breeze coming on and off the Manhattan Bridge into Brooklyn. And having the high concrete barriers between the bikes and the cars makes you feel much safer. Good job, DOT!
