We at Global Kids could not be more proud of the teens at the High School for Global Citizenship (which we are a partner with) for organizing and performing in the Haiti Solidarity Benefit last night at the Prospect Heights campus amphitheater. Many of the students at HSGC are of Haitian descent, so being able to come together and do something positive for their devastated country was an important act for them.
Here's a small taste of the evening's entertainment: the Ase Dance Theater Collective, doing a powerful and moving piece blending Caribbean and African dance and song influences. The video doesn't do justice to how amazing the entire performance was, I'm afraid. Other performers included Chris Rob, the Zing Experience, and HSGC students Alove Saint Surin and Andre Rousseau.
Toward the end of the night the MC Batala reported that over $1,600 $6,000 had been raised by the benefit. Not bad for a last minute, youth-organized event! Congrats to everyone involved for a great evening for a great cause, particularly my colleagues Coco and Tene for their leadership in getting this organized.
UPDATE 1/23/10, 12PM: Coco tells me that they actually raised over $6,000! Wow!
