I'm unfortunately travelling this week, so I'll be missing the celebrations of two great swing institutions in New York: Jelly Roll Productions and the New York Swing Dance Society. But you should go if you can!
First up, on Friday, February 19, Jelly Roll Productions will be celebrating their seventh year of operations with a dance party featuring Gordon Webster. Jelly Roll is dedicated to bringing together great live jazz music and swing dancers at some of the best dance events I've ever been to. Head to Sal Anthony's SPQR at 133 Mulberry, where there will be dancing from 9 pm – 2 am.
Then on Saturday, February 20, the venerable New York Swing Dance Society will be hosting a fundraiser dance with DJs Ryan Swift and George Gee. The NYSDS has been supporting regular lindy hop events for the past two decades, bringing together an intergenerational mix of dancers. That's at St Jeans Church at East 76th Street at Lexington Ave. Dancing from 9 to midnight.
