I haven't been to my doctor since I turned 40, so I went in for a check-up this month. I got the results of my blood work yesterday. My refined and gentle Caribbean doctor Robinson told me the good news: I'm in great shape. Sugar levels: normal (!); cholesterol: normal; blood pressure: very good. Whew!
The only yellow flag was my iron levels. I've pretty much been anemic my whole life, so no news there. He prescribed ferrosequel supplements. Sadly he did not suggest I eat more hamburgers and steak. But it will be interesting to see if the supplements help my energy levels.
My doctor did say that the biking and dancing and the rest of my active lifestyle were clearly helping keep me healthy.
I'm going to celebrate by dancing to Sharon Jones tonight at the Apollo! Woo hoo!
The caution with iron supplements is that they will likely make you nauseous, even with food, plus a few other side effects that are probably listed in the paperwork it comes with.
If it’s too much to stand, you might be better off just adding more steak – on the rare side, not the well-done side – to your diet instead.
Congrats on the otherwise clean bill of health!
