In praise of Bonnie Thunders of the Bronx Gridlock: a jammer to end all jammers

Posted on June 17, 2010 by

BonnieThunders Last weekend at Hunter College I had the pleasure of seeing the "Bronx Gridlock" take on the "Manhattan Mayhem" as part of the 2010 season of the Gotham Girls roller derby.  I'm generally not a sports person, and certainly not as a spectator.  But there's something wonderful, subversive and inspiring about roller derby that always gets me.

It was a thrilling match, with the Manhattan Mayhem taking an early lead in the first 10 minutes.  And then #340 Bonnie Thunders of the Bronx Gridlock stepped into the jammer position. And it was like a totally different game.

Bonnie was virtually unstoppable, speeding past the other jammer, weaving in and out of the Manhattan blockers, leaping over fallen skaters, and just generally leaving everyone in the dust.  I don't really understand how she does it, but she skates with such grace and economy of motion, while others seems to flail and stumble around her.   Perhaps it's the figure skating background. Or that she is rail thin, allowing her to slide in between blockers.

Whatever it is, I love to see her skate.

She helped destroy the Brooklyn Bombshells in the season opener. It was sad, being a Brooklynite, but I couldn’t help but admire how easy Bonnie made it look.
