New York lindy hopper Mike Thibault posted on his blog a scan of this amazing illustrated nightlife map of Harlem during the height of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s. So many cool details, including colloquial expressions ('what's da numbah"), mores about alcohol and drug use (marijuana cigarettes 2 for $.25), popular dances ("snakehips," lindy hop), and clubs (Savoy, Small's, Radium).
I particularly love this detail of the Savoy and Cab Calloway in the lower left corner. Cab is of course shouting "hi de hi de hi dee ho!" and cats are dancing the lindy to a live band.
So evocative of what it might have been like to be there.
Thanks for the research on this and sharing it, Mike!
