This morning I had a really fun time at a breaking photo shoot done by my friend Lynn, a talented photographer and fellow lindy hopper. She has a good eye for catching dancers in motion, as you can see from her recent shoot of the General Mischief Dance Theater group and awesome lindy hoppers Evita Arce and Mike Jaeger.
My motivation for getting good pics of myself is simple. I know that my career as a b-boy isn't going on much longer. So I want some good documentation of what I am doing now that I can look back on and share in years to come.
I also thought it would be a good exercise for me, since b-boying is very much about showmanship and presentation. I can be very inward focused in my dancing, so doing a photo shoot and a show forces me to think about what I want to communicate to an audience, how I want to be perceived. Really valuable stuff, beyond just dancing.
We were joined by fellow b-boy Eugene (pictured above), who I'm working with on a show in November. Having another breaker I thought would be helpful in coming up with ideas for shots, giving feedback on body positioning and variations, and general support. And Eugene was keen to get good pictures of himself dancing.
Thanks, Lynn for sharing your photography skills and expertise with Eugene and I today! Can't wait to see the pics!
