One of the last things I wanted to do in New York was throw a dance party and invite all of my friends to hang out and dance together. So on Saturday, January 22, more than sixty of my favorite people gathered at You Should Be Dancing Studios to get their groove on. It was the perfect culmination of my 15 years in NYC to see folks from my Quaker Meeting, Global Kids, and the many friends I’ve made through lindy hop and hip-hop over the years all in the same room.
DJs Santi and Zev kept the room rocking the whole night, spinning everything from old skool hip-hop and R&B, soul, and swing. I had a fantastic two-song jam that could easily have just kept going and going with all of the people who wanted to jump in. But then we would never get to the fantastic cake that Eff brought for everyone! Appropriately enough, he ordered a black and white cake, with a very cute inscription.
My hip-hop friends and I did a couple of cyphers during the night, which were mostly not captured unfortunately. But here’s a short clip of me breaking filmed by Will.
Thanks to Atalanta and Eff for helping put together this party, to my fantastic DJ friends Zev and Santi, and Tammy at You Should Be Dancing Studios for being so accomodating and welcoming. I couldn’t ask for a better and more appropriate send off.
