One of my biggest hurdles as a dancer is the ability to learn and retain long sequences of choreography. I just seem to take much longer to learn even fairly short sequences of moves than other people in performance classes or workshops. It's super annoying.
Am I doomed to always have this as a barrier to performing as a dancer? Is this one of those hard-wired things where some people can absorb knowledge kinaesthetically and other people can't? Or are there ways that you can train yourself to be better at learning and retaining choreography?
Just something I'm obsessing about lately as I think about where I want to go with my dancing next.
did you see the recent nytimes story on memory training? http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/02/20/magazine/mind-secrets.html
i haven’t tried looking into it, but as another dancer who struggles with learning choreography, the general insistence that the memory champions are just regular people who’ve trained this ability gives me hope.
Thanks for sharing this. Really interesting!
