Last Thursday was the "Open House" at the 9:20 Special dance in San Francisco. This is when the 9:20 organizers throw open the doors to the community and allow anyone to come in for a free swing dance lesson and enjoy dancing to the music in the huge dancehall of the Russian Center on Divisadero and Sutter.
It was a rockin night, with hundreds and hundreds of folks coming to swing out together. I loved going up to the balcony and seeing the entire ballroom full of people dancing their hearts out.
A highlight for me was seeing the performance by the staff of 9:20, including many of my friends. The choreo is very simple and yet really shows the joy, fun and musicality of the dance at its best. Kudos to the whole crew: Iris, Kirk, Nathan, Manu, Nicole, Ann, Alex, Jean and Bromley.
There was also a really fun group choreography piece taught by Bromley and Jean that you can see here.
Having a free open house is a great way to expose the dance to new audiences and potential fans. I'm sure lots of visitors left Thursday wanting to learn and dance more.
