One of the main attractions of the San Francisco Bay Area for me is the diverse and interconnected dance communities that thrive around here. I'm first and foremost a lindy hopper and a close second a hip-hop dancer. And the Bay is one of the best places in the world to find healthy lindy hop and hip-hop dance scenes.
Saturday night at the "Swingin the Soul" Party in Soma was a perfect example of what I came here for. On stage we had the groove-tastic Supertaster band featuring Crystal Monee Hall playing some kick ass soul and R&B, with some jazz in the mix. DJs Spuds and and Kylie spun vintage and new soul after that into the wee hours. On the dance floor we had west coast swingers, lindy hoppers, and blues dancers getting down together to the same groove.
It was a beautiful thing.
Each dance I had was different and unique and wonderful. I danced blues with Myriam, lindy with Shanti, hip-hop with Liz, and fake-west coast with a bunch of people! At one point Rachel and I were dancing to a James Brown song, and she starts doing doing the Time step (aka Morris Day and the Time, you know the one.) I just lost it, it was so dope.
Thanks, Melissa and Nicole, Supertaster, DJs Spuds and Kylie and all the fabulous dancers. This is what living in the Bay is all about for me.
I agree – an amazing event. The more we fuse, the better dancers we become. Looking forward to the next!
Ah I didn’t bring up the “fusion” word!
And thanks for the dope dances, Liz.
