I had a blast dancing with my FreePlay Dance Crew this weekend at the Castro Street Fair. It was a huge event with thousands of people milling about, so definitely performance anxiety was high for a lot of us. And we had a ton of new material to work through in our 40 minute set. ZOMG.
But we perservered, delivered the hip-hop jazzy goodness, and had a really fun time doing it. So I'm super proud of my crew and our leaders Josh and Liz for holding it all together.
One funny sidenote was an enormous wardrobe malfunction I had 30 minutes before show time. As we were blocking out one of our routines on stage, I did a handstand splits and managed to, of course, split my pants all the way at the crotch. That will teach me to buy cheap ass H&M pants to perform in. Definitely not the kind of attention I wanted during my breaking solo!
With literally 15 minutes to spare, I frantically ran around the Castro looking for clothing shops. I luckily found Outfit, a men's boutique that had black pants right in front. They were a fancy, stretchy, slightly flared, shiny black pinstriped trouser, perfect for wearing in the Castro Street Fair and beyond. The clerk Samuel promised me that I could do the splits in them and they would be fine, and even offered to tailor them for free if I came back later. I gave him my credit card and then raced out of there, just a few minutes before show time.
I'm happy to report that I ripped it up, without , uh, ripping it up. And my crew members say my new pants make my butt look good. LOL.
So thanks to Samuel at Outfit for saving the day! Check them out at 4079 18th Street near Hartford Street in the Castro.
